It still mad the noise when I disconnected and reconnected and had the safely remove device icon in the right tray. First, back up any important data on the drive if the drive has important data on it. And - before doing anything else - See if a similar device will be recognised on your PC, and then check if another PC will recognise the device(s).

If the disk can't be mounted when it's the only one and DU can't see it then either the external enclosure has a problem or the disk needs replacing. No formatting necessary. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!! All the tests I did with 'Data Life Guard' gave me a tick for good health.
